What are cookies

Cookies are short text files created by the web server and stored on your computer through the browser. When you return to the same website later, the browser sends the stored cookie back and the server receives all the information previously stored on your computer. An absolute majority of websites use cookies for their activity.

How cookies are categorized

Cookies can be categorized according to who puts them on the web, i.e.:

  • First-party cookies - Their validity is limited to the website domain you are browsing. These cookies are considered the safest.
  • Third-party cookies - These are placed from a different domain via a script. Users can thus be tracked across domains. They are often used to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising channels.

Depending on their duration, cookies can be divided into:

  • Session cookies - These are deleted from your computer when you close the browser.
  • Persistent cookies - These remain intact after closing the browser, and they are only deleted after a very long time (depending on your browser and cookie settings). You can also remove them manually.
